L3Harris Technologies has developed a new member of its Falcon III radio family, and launched it at the International Defence Exhibition & Conference (IDEX) 2021 in Abu Dhabi.
The RF-7850D is a multi-channel, multi-mission vehicular radio that L3Harris claims to be one of the industry’s smallest. Designed for simple installation in a vehicle – with no requirement for a shock mount or specialised racking – it weighs 5.2 kg, and measures 71x264x234 mm. The radio is intended to be a part of a modular system controlled from an external device, enabling it to be installed wherever there is available space, without the user requiring easy access to the controls.
The basic twin-channel radio has two variants offering different channel options. One channel always covers the 30-512 MHz frequency range, while the second channel can either be the same, or customers can opt for a UHF/L/S Band channel with a frequency range of 225-2,500 MHz.
L3Harris’s new Falcon III RF-7850D multi-channel vehicular radio has a small form factor, and can be installed wherever it is convenient within a vehicle. The two-channel radio can have a third channel integrated by adding a mission module, which can be seen here attached to the top of the radio. (L3Harris)
The radio hosts the L3Harris TDMA Networking Waveforms (TNW) waveform suite already in use in other RF-7850 variants, plus the Advanced Networking Wideband Waveform (ANW2). Additional optional waveforms include SINCGARS, Satellite Tactical Communications (STC), and HAVEQUICKI/II.
The radio can also integrate an additional mission module (MM), which will provide a third channel. Tim Soine, the director of product management, communication systems, at L3Harris, told Janes
