Indian Army takes delivery of Akashteer air-defence system

The Indian Army has taken delivery of a locally developed tactical command-and-control (C2) apparatus known as the Air Defence Control and Reporting System (ADC&RS).

The first batch of the system was handed over by Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) on 4 April and it has been inducted into service with the Corps of Army Air Defence, the company has confirmed.

Also referred to as Project Akashteer, the ADC&RS seeks to better co-ordinate the operations of ground-based air-defence (GBAD) systems and improve the Indian Army's ability to monitor low-level airspaces.

A INR19.82 billion (USD236.96 million) contract for the ADC&RS was awarded to BEL by the Indian Ministry of Defence in March 2023.Contracts for nine other programmes were also awarded.

Besides co-ordinating GBAD elements, the Akashteer system automates air-defence functions of the various nodes on the network, including mobile units.

It can also identify and track targets and assign the weapons to engage these targets.

The control centres of this system can be mobile or vehicle-mounted, which makes it possible for the ADC&RS to be deployed closer to the front lines.
