Japan's Defence Minister Nobuo Kishi has said that Tokyo will provide bullet-proof vests and other non-lethal defence supplies to Ukraine.
Kishi said the National Security Council's decision was in response to a request by Ukraine's Defence Minister Oleksii Reznikov.
Items to be sent to Ukraine include vests, helmets, tents, cameras, hygiene products, emergency food supplies, and power generators. The equipment will be delivered on Japan Self-Defense Forces (SDF) aircraft.
A spokesperson from the Japanese Ministry of Defense (MoD) told Janes, “We are still arranging what and how many items we will send to Ukraine.”
The MoD also confirmed that this is the first time that Japan will be delivering bullet-proof vests and helmets to a foreign country.
Earlier, Japan announced plans to provide Ukraine with emergency humanitarian aid worth USD100 million and a loan of the same amount. In a rare move, Japan has said it will also accept refugees.
