The second training ship on order for the Qatari Emiri Naval Forces, Al Shamal (QTS 92), was commissioned into service during a ceremony held at Anadolu Shipyard (ADIK) in Istanbul on 25 February.
Al Shamal is one of two cadet training ships ordered from Turkish shipbuilder ADIK in March 2018. Both ships were laid down in 2019 and launched in late 2020. First-of-class Al Doha (QTS 91) was delivered in August 2021.
The ships have a full load displacement of 2,150 tonnes, a top speed of 22 kt, and a standard range of 2,000 n miles at 15 kt. They feature a second bridge for training and a flight deck aft for a medium helicopter.
In addition to their role supporting cadet training, the two ships have a secondary role as offshore patrol vessels and are also equipped for firefighting and medical support.
Each ship's armament includes one Leonardo Marlin small calibre naval gun system and two 12.7 mm machine guns.
