Smart Shooter's US subsidiary was awarded a contract, via Atlantic Diving Supply (ADS), to provide its SMASH 2000L weapon-mounted fire-control system to the US Army for counter-small unmanned aerial system (C-sUAS) defence.
“SMASH 2000L is also under evaluation by the US Marine Corps Rapid Capabilities Office (RCO), with recent live-fire tests conducted in early August,” the company said.
SMASH 2000L weighs about 1.5 lb and is about 40% lighter than its predecessor, Scott Thompson, Smart Shooter's vice-president and general manager for the US, told Janes on 11 October at the Association of the United States Army (AUSA) 2022 conference in Washington, DC.
He said weight was reduced via a lighter lithium battery, smaller electronics cards, and other technology advances.
The company's rifle-mounted SMASH fire-control system “was initially selected by the Joint – small Counter UAS Program Office (JCO) in June 2020 as the only dismounted kinetic solution to defeat drones”, Smart Shooter said. “The US Army Integrated Fires Rapid Capabilities Office (IFRCO) now took the initiative from the JCO selection to purchase the SMASH 2000L fire-control systems under PEO [Program Executive Office] Missiles & Space.”
SMASH uses image processing to automatically acquire a target from the sight's field-of-view, and then displays a box around the target in the shooter's reflex sight. A switch on the weapon's forestock enables the shooter to select and lock on to a target. SMASH will fire only when the sight is aligned to hit the target – and this includes ‘leading' a moving target.
