Vestdavit receives contract to supply davits for Finnish Squadron 2020 corvettes

Norwegian company Vestdavit has been awarded a contract to supply the davits that will equip the four new Pohjanmaa-class corvettes being procured for the Finnish Navy under its Squadron 2020 corvette programme.

Under the agreement, Vesdavit will supply eight of its high specification telescopic davits – two for each ship.

Announcing the contract on 1 February, Vesdavit said its davits were selected for their high level of reliability and redundancy for the rapid-response launch and recovery of interceptors and other craft in difficult sea conditions.

“Adaptability to work in harsh environments and high sea states, and compliance with shock requirements were an important criteria in winning this major davit award on one of the Finnish Navy's biggest newbuild projects to date,” it said.

South American navies continue hospital-ship construction, operations for riverine missions

South American nations continue to invest in hospital-ship construction and missions to bolster their riverine operations.

On 28 December the Peruvian shipyard SIMA laid in its Iquitos facilities the keels of Plataformas Itinerantes de Acción Social (PIAS) RíoUcayali I and PIAS RíoUcayali II, which will sail the Ucayali River and provide assistance to communities across 17 districts in Loreto and Ucayali regions.

In Brazil, construction continues at the shipbuilding company Estaleiro Bibi Eireli, which on 22 October commenced building in Manaus state, the hospital ship NAsH Anna Nery (U-170). The ship will measure 46.5 m in length and is scheduled to be delivered to the navy in August. When deployed as Brazil's most modern hospital ship, it will provide medical services to communities that live alongside rivers in Pará and Amapá states.

The PIAS vessels are scheduled to be ready for service by the first semester of 2024, according to Peruvian authorities, and construction will cost around USD8.3 million.

The Peruvian navy utilises a fleet of eight PIAS vessels. The fleet operates across several Peruvian rivers, including the Amazon, Putumayo, and Yavarí, while PIAS Lago Titicaca I

Mitsubishi carries out maiden sea trials for Philippines' first 97 m MRRV

Mitsubishi Shipbuilding has conducted sea trials for the Philippine Coast Guard's (PCG's) first 97 m multirole response vessel (MRRV).

The vessel conducted the trials in waters near Shimonoseki Shipyard & Machinery Works between 25 and 28 January, the PCG announced on its official social media channel on 2 February.

The trials were conducted to validate the vessel's speed, manoeuvrability, functionality of equipment, and safety features. Also present during the trials were the vessel's pioneering crew, and representatives from Japan Marine Science Incorporated, and Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (NK) Classification Society, the service added.

The vessel, which has been given pennant number 9701, was launched by Mitsubishi in July 2021. It is one of two MRRVs ordered by the Philippine Department of Transportation (DOTr) under a JPY14.6 billion (USD132 million) contract signed in 2019.

In a March 2020 media release that announced the conclusion of a supplementary agreement to construct the vessels, Mitsubishi described the MRRV as having an overall length of 94 m.

South African Navy falls short on sea hours target due to funding constraints

The South African Navy (SAN) is struggling to meet its operational commitments due to chronic underfunding, according to a recently published parliamentary portfolio committee report.

In its budgetary review and recommendations report for the Fiscal year (FY) 2020/2021, the South African Committee on Defence and Military Veterans said that ongoing funding shortfalls and the subsequent reduction in ship availability for taskings due to the postponement of planned maintenance meant that the SAN had been unable to meet its sea hours target for the year.

According to the report, in 2021 the SAN managed only 6.8 (the equivalent of around 284 sea days) of its target of 10 sea hours.

For the 2020/21 period, the navy's total budget allocation was set at ZAR4.738 billion (USD308 million), but this was reduced by ZAR221 million during the course of that period, the report said.
