Janes welcomes Major General Mick Ryan retd to its National Security Advisory Board

Janes, the source for foundational military open-source intelligence, welcomes Major General Mick Ryan (retd) to its National Security Advisory Board.

The National Security Advisory Board, chaired by Sean Corbett CB MBE, serves as the voice of Janes customers, providing strategic advice that drives the development of solutions that meet its customers’ ever-changing requirements.

“The expertise Major General Mick Ryan (retd) brings to our National Security Advisory Board is vital as we continue to support the missions of our customers in the Indo-Pacific region,” said Blake Bartlett, CEO of Janes. “His extensive career in the Australian Army, where he served on operations in East Timor, Iraq, and Afghanistan will be invaluable as we continue to build innovative solutions that make an essential contribution to our customers’ decision advantage from headquarters to the edge.”

About his appointment to the board, Ryan said, “It is an honour to join Janes National Security Advisory Board. I am looking forward to applying my experience from the battlefield to datasets where Janes foundational open-source intelligence is the leader.” He went on further to say, “My goal is to be the advocate for our Australian and Indo-Pacific customers. As the team continues to grow in Australia, I am delighted to be part of that growth.”

Ryan spent 35 years in the Australian Army, where he commanded Australian soldiers at multiple levels. He served on operations in East Timor, Iraq, and Afghanistan. He is an author of three books – War Transformed: The Future of 21st Century Great Power Competition and Conflict (2022); a White Sun War: The Campaign for Taiwan (2023), which is about a future war over Taiwan; and his latest book The War for Ukraine: Strategy and Adaptation Under Fire (2024).

He joins a prestigious list of National Security Advisory Board members, including:

  • Lieutenant General Jan Broeks, former director general of the International Military Staff (DGIMS) at NATO HQ
  • Terry Busch, former Machine-Assisted Analytic Rapid-Repository System (MARS) chief technology officer and chief data officer for the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA)
  • Jim Danoy, former briefer of the president of the United States
  • Emily Harding, deputy director and senior fellow of the International Security Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS)
  • Skip Maselli, business leader and strategist
  • Linda Weissgold, former deputy director for analysis at the CIA.
